2014 was just another special year to me, I suddenly found myself being addicted to calligraphy which have been a hidden element* of mine all these years.
So now I am really happy to find it out and enjoying the fun with it. Doing something because of passion rather than just obligation is totally different and it yields mush fantastic result.
I am so grateful that a friend asked me to write for his tattoo recently, this is my first time writing calligraphy in long sentence, I tried that with brush and graphic liner, and finally I prefer the result of using the pointed nib, though I am a beginner using this tool and still need some time to master, I enjoy playing with it.
And I really like the quote that I wrote for the tattoo this time, from Bob Marley. Though it may not be the same as what he meant, I see it as a reminder on my work and everything I do. Striving too much on perfection in a stubborn manner has been a problem to me that I always spend too much time re-doing again and again, it didn't only torture myself and the people working with me, I might even miss the beauty of imperfection.
Like drawing Enso, Calligraphy is not just another perfect moving meditation, you gain a lot during the process. I read a post in a calligraphy group online today saying,
That tells why I always found that my practices are unexpectedly done much better than those being took over-seriously. Going back to the tattoo, I chose two writings for my friend's decision(from my practices), while I suggested him to pick up one with less flaws, I was surprised that he chose the other instead and said he simply like the way it is. So again this is telling me not to dig into the perfection of every detail, but to appreciate the natural flow of the stroke, to see the beauty as it is, the perfection of imperfection..
So I am not perfect, do I have to be?
